DC9 - Paul Triquard

Project title: “Identification of eukaryotic pathogens of HABs that are relevant to Scottish salmon farming.”
Advisors: Pieter van West, Bettina Scholz, Harald Rotsch
Home institution: Institute of Medical Sciences, Aberdeen Oomycete Laboratory, University of Aberdeen, Scotland
Summary: I am a PhD student at the University of Aberdeen under the supervision of Pieter van West focusing on the identification of eukaryotic pathogens (especially oomycetes and chytrids) of Harmful Algal Blooms relevant to Scottish salmon farming. My research aims to establish a community profile, create a culture collection, and investigate infection processes.
Keywords: Microalgae, Host/pathogen interactions, Aquaculture, Metabarcoding, Microscopy
More details and contact: paul.triquard@abdn.ac.uk
Planned secondment(s):
At BioPol with Bettina Scholz to learn isolation with micromanipulation techniques and culturing and maintenance of algal-pathogen interactions.
At CSIC with Javier Dieguez-Uribeondo to learn phylogenetic analysis.
At IAGE with Franz Durandet to set up early detection system of droplet digital PCR of algal blooms and their pathogens.
At OTAQ with Harry Rotsch to help improve the artificial intelligence of the life algal bloom detection system with cultures obtained during the 2-year sampling period.
