Research activities

The molecular aspects of the adaptative processes and defence mechanisms developed by bacteria constitute the main topic of research. Antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria (termed microcins and bacteriocins) are isolated, purified and characterized in order to identify their structures, mechanisms of antibacterial activity and biosynthesis pathways. The molecular mechanisms involved in their recognition by specific receptors at the membrane of susceptible bacteria and the interactions with their intracellular targets are studied. Some microcins and bacteriocins carry posttranslational modifications, thus belonging to the fast expanding family of ribosomally synthesized and posttranslationally modified peptides (RiPPs). The enzymatic systems involved in their biosynthesis and installation of the posttranslational modifications leading to the mature active peptides are characterized. The ecological roles of the microcins and bacteriocins, which are major actors in microbial competions, are examined with a focus on their interactions with the gut microbiota. Their applications in human or veterinary medicine are considered.
