Fungi are extraordinary chemists equipped with a highly efficient molecular toolkit, whether for degrading nature’s most resilient polymers (such as wood lignin) or building complex molecules.
At the heart of this machinery lie specialized metabolites. Unlike primary metabolism molecules, which are essential for immediate survival, these compounds play major ecological roles, acting as communication molecules, defense mechanisms, or tools for colonizing biotopes. This reservoir also represents a goldmine for discovering new bioactive molecules with potential therapeutic, antibiotic, or industrial properties.
By combining the power of molecular genetics, the refinement of biochemical analysis, and the precision of NMR, our goal is not only to discover tomorrow’s medicines or biopesticides but also to enrich our understanding of the evolution of chemical diversity in living organisms and its role within ecosystems.
