Research activities

My area of expertise deals with filarial parasites (Onchocercidae nematodes) and their Wolbachia bacterial endosymbionts. The host range of these nematodes covers all terrestrial vertebrates worldwide. Several filarial species are responsible for tropical diseases agents, such as lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis ("river blindness").

Another interesting particularity of filaria is that they can harbor an endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia, also present in arthropods. This bacteria is now a target for therapeutic drugs, as the filaria can not survive without their bacterial endosymbionts.

We also also interested in this tripartite symbiotic association: an eukaryotic microorganism - Onchocercidae-, a bacterium endosymbionte - Wolbachia - and an evolved organism - a terrestrial vertebrate - and in the processes of adaptation at the molecular and cellular level of these partners. More specifically we study:

1. the phylogenetic relationships between filaria and bacteria

2. the migrations and the development of the filaria and their interactions with the cellular (granulocytes, macrophages) and tissular (lymthatic, blood and lung) environment of their vertebrate host

3. the immune responses of the vertebrate specific to the bacteria and those specific to thz filaria, as well as their modifications by agents of stress, such as vaccination processes, adjuvants or anti-filaria/anti-bacteria treatments

We have developed a mouse model of filariasis (Litomosoides sigmodontis) that we use routinely for questions regarding points 2 and 3.

Currently we are interested in the coevolutionnary history of bird filariae and the coevolution between collemboles and Wolbachia (collab. C. d'Haesse, UMR7179) and we study the chronic pulmonary inflammation in the model of filariosis using  L. sigmodontis.
